Univ of Michigan in state fits that bill for many, or at least it did. Maybe admissions is too hard and unpredictable even for in-staters now for it to be a safety though. I definitely hear of high-stats in-state Asian kids not getting in.

It’s lost popularity overall since the days I attended. The departments are still highly ranked but the institution has grown far too dependent upon OOS and international tuition dollars. Many in-state students look elsewhere.

Long ago, my safety school was Towson. The reason I didn’t want to go there is because I would’ve had to commute (I lived nearby). I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of living at home.

A certain Big 10 school with world-renowned departments for my majors. I was in-state then though and tuition, fees, and room and board cost roughly one-third of what they are now. I was also fortunate enough to earn several scholarships which have since been eliminated.

I know someone who said their safety school was also their first choice. That must have been great from a stress perspective.
