Subject: State Superintendent Karen Salmon's ignorant comment
Another single mom teacher here. I "take my kid to work" every day now on my various platforms as I teach my high school students.

I remember hearing her say that and as an educator, it made me cringe. I thought it was very off-putting.

I saw it live as I was watching the press conference. I'm not sure what that response was all about, because she clearly didn't understand the question. The question was actually about whether childcare facility staff were equipped to facilitate distance learning (referring to the essential employees' kids who could access day cares at the time of that press conference).
It was definitely an ignorant comment but it didn't even make sense in light of the question she was asked.
My district's teacher only FB page picked it up right away. I'm a single mother and a teacher. If she pays me to stay home, I will!

Another PP she said it- I was surprised the news media didn't pick up on it earlier.

Ugh, that is really frustrating. Read the room, lady. As a two-teacher family, we are juggling babycare, supervising our elementary kids' learning, AND teaching our own classes. I feel fortunate that at least we're very familiar with the technology and resources, and that, while not ideal, it's possible to do our jobs while holding a baby. I know many other WFH parents are not so fortunate.

Awful. Doesn't she know that most teachers are women with working spouses, also?

Frankly, I think she should be fired for that comment or, at the very least, forced to retract it and offer a detailed and thoughtful response that reflects the actual needs of her constituents. Most families in Maryland, aka her state, do not have a stay at home parent. So all of her judgment aside, she's not doing her job if she doesn't understand the needs of the families she's supposed to be serving.

I'm enormously lucky in many ways, and can WFH pretty much indefinitely, but as a single parent this gets under my skin.
Sorry, Karen, but there are a lot of kids in Maryland being raised by one parent, or a grandparent, or where both parents NEED to work to make ends meet.

Take 20 seconds of your time and watch this video. State Superintendent Karen Salmon was asked how essential parents would do e-learning this spring; if it was up to the child care providers to do it all day. Her response was, “I have no idea what individual families are doing. I imagine they’re doing what most of us did when we raised our kids and one parent stays home and one parent goes to work. So I’m not sure I understand your question.” I’m lucky enough to have a partner and both of us have understanding workplaces. But I really feel for the parents that will have to quit their job or find child care for their younger kids if e-learning continues into the fall, given the lack of understanding in the administration.
