My 9 year old was just complaining about this. I remember it from her older sister. There was like a whole year where the choice was between wearing stuff that was ridiculously small on her, or stuff that was ridiculously large on her. IMHO, that's the worst gap.
The gap between 10-12 and 14-16 isn't as bad, in my opinion. (Although there's another problem with tweens, in that very few grow in height on track with how they grow in weight, which means that some of them end up very tall and very thin for a while before their weight catches up, and others end up short and a little heavy for a while before they hit a growth spurt--and it's challenging to find appropriate clothes for either!).

So where is everyone buying clothes for their in between sized kids???

Very few brands have size 9. Gymboree used to. Everything there ran a little small (especially compared to a huge brand like Cat & Jack), but it was great. They also didn't used to do split sizing.

I'm convinced that like every cheapening trend in clothing - using more polyester and rayon blends, thinner fabric, etc. - more and more stores doing split sizing is about saving them money while charging customers the same prices as before.

I have a 9yo and a 12yo. They are both wearing 10/12 from these brands, despite the fact that one child is 10" taller and 35 lbs heavier than the other. But the 9yo has long since outgrown an 8, and the 14 would fall right off the shoulders of the 12yo. The 10/12 doesn't really fit either of them, but it's better than the alternatives. Really wish I could find clothes that actually fit them, though!

Yeah it goes 6/6x, 7/8, 10/12, 14/16. I found the difference between the two largest sizes the most notable.

OP again - we have separate issues with Old Navy clothes. The last two times I've ordered from them, the shirts have fallen off her shoulders like it's 1985. I don't know if it's that they are cut wide or if the necks get stretched out after just one wear, but it's every shirt we've bought from them lately!

Maybe I'll have to do shirts from Target and pants from Old Navy...I love Primary for the fit but they're expensive.

OP here - yes, these are girls sizes!

Thats not how cat and jack works. Its not a toddler 6 it's a girls 6.

Op is right. The 6 is a small and 7/8 is a medium and 7/8s are a huge leap. I was able to find some graphic tees there that were not cat and jack and the mediums fit better. But they don't have alot of brands outside c&j so slim pickings.

You need to be buying size xs 4/5 if you are going up from toddler 6.

The Cat & Jack stuff we own goes 6/6x to 7/8 (then 10/12). Yes, the size jumps are huge. I hate split sizing.

Weird. Are you sure those aren't Junior size?

My first grader has solidly grown out of her size 6 stuff, so I ordered some Cat & Jack pajamas in size 7/8 since that is the next size up and they are HUGE. Why isn't there a size 7? Is this new? Is this normal in big girls sizes?

I ended up ordering from Carters Kids because they have a size 7 that fits great but man, it took a month to get them...
