I don’t want the economy to rebound over the summer so orange fatty can claim credit for it, and trick all the dupes into voting for him like he’s some kind of hero who saved the country. F’ that noise!!!! I want to keep everything closed and people out of work until the election, so people will still be pissed off at him. If things start going back to normal now, people will have better moods, and stuff like that favors an incumbent.

Look, I’m a pragmatist. These aren’t intelligent people we’re talking about here. They need to be manipulated, because otherwise they fall for gimmicks and that’s what got us here in the first place. Middle America is stupid. And yet they vote. And they WILL vote for him if they perceive that things are getting better.

Remember 2004? I sure do. Bush had just started the Iraq war, and in 2004, the war was going pretty well for him. Jingoistic a-holes everywhere were waving flags and shouting “stay the course”... and these stupid hicks in OH, PA and elsewhere bought it. “Stay the course” got W re-elected, because idiots thought everything was improving.

That same scenario will play out again, IF we open the economy back up. Stupid people will go back to work, get some cash in their pockets, and think everything is getting better. And then they’ll vote for that assclown again. That’s why we MUST keep the shut down in place until the election.

It is hard to tell if PP is being sarcastic because I have heard so much crazy talk on both sides! There are the people who think we should never leave our homes again... not even to take a walk outside. Then, there are the people who think we should open everything up immediately with no exceptions. I think that the answer lies somewhere in between.

I read an opinion article a few days ago about collateral health damage from all of this: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/the-fight-against-covid-19-threatens-to-cause-collateral-health-damage/ Heart procedures, "non-essential" surgeries, and screenings such as colonoscopies and mammograms have been delayed. How many deaths will occur as a result of this? Also, I am saddened when I think of the families who have lost jobs and cannot feed their children or who are now battling depression because of it. These are just a few examples.

Here's my question... What does everyone think should re-open and not re-open?

I feel as if most small businesses could re-open as long as they follow certain guidelines to reduce the spread of the virus. However, restaurants probably should stick with curbside pickup, delivery, and outdoor services. Also, large gatherings and religious services should be avoided. We should allow doctor's offices to provide health screenings (colonoscopies, etc.) and procedures. However, doctors should continue offering Telehealth appointments for those who do not need to be seen in person. We should give everyone the option of distance learning in the fall. However, we should allow those who want to return to school to be able to do so. And, companies should urge all employees to continue working from home if possible. We can slow the spread of this virus while also returning to some sort of normalcy.

Do you realize that there might never be a vaccine? They are testing vaccines. However, that does not mean they will work. Even if one of these vaccines works, it might be 18-24 months before it is available. More damage than good will happen if everyone stays home for that amount of time. The plan was never for everyone to stay home for ever. It was to flatten the curve and allow hospitals not to become overwhelmed. Now, it's time to SLOWLY return to normal. Eventually, we will reach heard immunity.

Well, that's not remotely true — the city has said we're three days of continued dropping community transmission away from moving to Phase One reopening, which is basically what every other place that's opening is doing.

What is the status of the newly tran$formed convention center into hospital? Any news on this? Overwhelmed or sitting empty?

This way of life is not sustainable. At this point, the benefits do not outweigh the risks. We have flattened the curve and need to slowly return to "normal" in order to prevent further collateral damage.

The proposed phases are promising, but they could use some tweaking. For example, places of worship should not reopen in phase 1. Even with 50% occupancy, this is a terrible idea. However, hairdressers, barbers, small businesses, etc. need to re-open and can provide services while maintaining safe environments.

Schools need to re-open in the fall! There are children suffering abuse, starving, battling depression, being neglected, or simply not receiving the educational services they need. School districts can offer a distance learning option for families who do not feel comfortable sending kids to school.

We don't need to rush into travel. People who can work from home should continue working from home. When children return to school, parents should continue working from home if possible. Large gatherings should be avoided. People with compromised immune systems should stay home.

We can use common sense to improve our quality of life, save our economy, and educate our children while continuing to flatten the curve. What we are doing now is not sustainable.

The only people who think this is a partisan issue are a small collection of nuts on the right who happen to get Trump's attention. The closure was very broadly supported by politicians in both parties and careful reopening is, similarly, happening in states run by both parties. DC is slow to reopen because it's a dense area and we're being careful about benchmarks but we'll reopen soon enough.

THe longer DC closes the the more it will be an outlier. I mean even NY, NJ and CT are opening, places that are heavily democratic but are realistic that this cant continue forever.

For better or worse, by design or not, our patchwork national/state/local approach will result in each of us deciding how much risk we are willing to take in resuming normal life.

Will we patronize businesses, events, travel/destinations?

Will we go back to work/school/other institutions?

Will we interact with one another? On what basis?

Will we get tested and trust the results?

Will we take the vaccine and trust it? (Even when we get a vaccine, it won't be ideal. It won't have been fully tested. It may not even be available in the safest form (not enough medical glass in the world for all the vials).)

Will we demand the government continue to bail out those in need?

Will we demand a November vote / or demand a delay?

Societies and economies are built on the faith we put in them.

Not advocating, just saying that's the way it is.
