Agree that this is not your information to share. I also think that you were nosy for snooping around in their personal business like that.

I would wonder about a person who purposely misled others into believing that they actually owned a property that they did not own, though. Especially, if they are not even married to their SO. Does the person understand that their name is not on the title and that they have no legal claim to the property? If not, are they being duped into paying the mortgage on a property that they do not own and have no legal claim to. That, right there, would be more of a worry to me than if they had misrepresented their home purchase in order to get housewarming gifts or even just to impress others.

It would be like me inviting family members to a college graduation party....even though I hadn't actually graduated from college or telling people that I had gotten married even if I hadn't really done so.

This! I own my home solely and my long-term SO is not on the deed for a few reasons, but he was there every step of the way, has put even more work into the house than I have by far, and he pays half the mortgage. Just because he didn’t technically “buy” it doesn’t mean he can’t be proud of it. It’s very much our house.

It may not be in their name for a variety of reasons, so MYOB. Do you not own your own home yet, and are jealous? By searching the public record, you went in with horrible intentions and negativity. OMG! Sounds like my relative who looks up every other relative's name in the court databases to see who has speeding tickets or worse.

How pathetic is your life that THAT is what you actively choose to a) do and b) focus on?

If someone told me this, my opinion of the person telling me this information would change. I would think that they are pathetic and weird and probably begin to ghost them because I don't want that in my life.

My opinion of the person who looked it up and shared that information would change. I confess, I have occasionally looked stuff up like that to see what they bought/sold for, but that info is strictly for my own nosiness -- I don't share it with anyone other than spouse. Not cool to spread gossip.

Like others said, maybe they are making mortgage payments but have a bad credit score? Maybe they have a deal with SO that once credit score comes up, they will remortage and add them to the deed?

Everyone was congratulatory and proud of 40-something family member for settling down and buying a home. Turns out from public records that their SO actually bought it and is the only one on title. Why would someone lie about something like that? Would your opinion of this person change?
