My 2nd grader has live instruction every morning. 50 minutes ELA, 45 minutes specials and 50 minutes math. They are covering new material. We are pretty pleased.

I really don’t expect much, it’s nice for the kids to have some connection back to school and classmates. One of my kids’ teachers has decided not to hold any live instruction, and it’s clear that child feels much more disconnected than my child whose teacher holds a few sessions each week.

That article is not interesting. It says that because we don’t know when/if a vaccine is coming we’ve gotta soldier on and reopen life. We can’t stay locked down forever- based on a hope that a cure is coming. I don’t agree- but can understand, if we had safety nets in place to catch those who got sick when we opened. Then- after trying to make an argument for not basing choices off of imagine things/vaccines he ends with a dream like scenario where this all just might end with a world war? Give me a break. You can’t advocate making decisions based on the here & now and then end with the promise of a fictional world war if we don’t take the authors advice.

If your 2nd grader is having 3.5 hours of zoom class a week, that is 3.5 hours more live instruction than DCPS elementary schools who have 0 live instruction. Not allowed because of “equity” issues.

Who told you this lie?

I’m an ES teacher, I have 30 min live instruction everyday and 45 min small group lessons M-TH. (Your child would have 2 of those each week on an agreed time) Makeups are Friday.
Recorded lessons are only 2x a week though.

No, they are ahead on the lessons by a lot.

There's a wide range of what is happening, even within the same school. I have 2 older elementary kids and one has live instruction every day, clear expectations re: assighments and links to those assignments. A protocol that has been in place since week 2. It's working fine.
The other kid (different teacher) has rotated apps and platforms so many times i can't even keep up. Assignments sometimes posted in certain places, sometimes emailed with links, and sometimes they aren't there even when they're listed in another place. It's a shitshow. I have created my own home supplement for this child because I can't even with the disorganization. I am NOT looking forward to another shuffle like this in the fall.

At our elementary, every week we get:
15 minutes live home room x 4
20 minutes live ELA x 1
20 minutes live math x 2
15 minutes live library x 1
15 minutes live special x 2

We do get a lot of computer programs and written stuff as well. There are also specials worksheets and they've just added some random special interest chats.

It's not great but it's not bad. The primary problem is with ELA which requires a complete rethink of how to adapt the curriculum to the platform. Specials are done as a stand alone add on and frankly are completely lost in all the clutter.

They've done an admirable job trying to pull this together at the last moment but hopefully they will adjust for the inevitable DL this fall.

What's the optional hour and half Zoom for? Not sure we heard about that!

Yes, class meetings every day for 30 minutes. Doesn't mean any actual learning is happening though. My chidl gets about about 45 minutes to 1 hour of love actual instruction a week and then a lot of material to work on on her own, inclusing learning apps. We are happy with it because these are extrordinary times, but it isn't anything close to what was happening in the classroom.
