Masks would become ineffective in a daycare due to how often babies and toddler would be touching them.

Also, young children could be scared by the sight of seeing their teachers in masks. They don’t understand and it could end up just making them really upset. Before you say “oh they’re being wusses,” I’m talking about kids who are 3 and under.

I'm not a director, but our Maryland day care sent out a survey asking what parents would be open to. Possible precautions included staggered drop offs, not letting adults in the building, temperature checks at drop off and randomly through the day, social distancing of teachers and kids.

I replied that I would not send my kid if they are practicing social distancing -- seems unworkable as a practical matter, and also in my opinion harmful as children need to be close. What, they're not going to change babies' diapers? But the other precautions would be ok with me.

No word on when they'll actually reopen though. And I probably won't send my kid when they do, because I have an elementary age child also, and I'm not going to send one but not the other. I need them to entertain each other so I can work!

I'm a center director and am being vague because OSSE is being vague with us. Right now they are working on a color system from red (where we are now) to green (no restrictions or precautions at all). We will not open until we are no longer red. But we don't know what the parameters of the other colors are yet, hence the vagueness.

They’ve had no cases and have been open the entire time.

Do they let classrooms mix? Do they clean play equipment between use?

What are there current illness rules? Have you seen them implemented? What are their policies on notifying you about covid exposure?

Teachers are not wearing masks.

Classrooms aren’t mixing.

Yes, they clean the play equipment.

Illness rules are the same as they’ve always been, except for the addition of the temp check before the kids can go in.

They will notify of any COVID exposure because they’d have to close for a cleaning and quarantine period for any kids/teachers directly exposed.

Am interested to know what changes will be made (that is which guidelines you will be following and which ones you won't) and why (eg not practical to have toddlers social distance, no room to space cribs 6 ft apart). For those who do not have a private playground (most downtown DC centers) will you be going outside at all? More or less often? Thanks! Also interested if people have heard specific info from their centers.

If your daycare isn't open yet, they probably don't have a finalized plan. I woudn't expect a plan to be in place until a week or so before the projected opening date. Right now, the focus may be on PPP.

I can give you information from Maryland, since my daughter goes to preschool right now (we are essential workers).

Here’s how it works:

- All staff must have temp checks before they can enter the building
- Same for the kids
- Parents drop off and pick up outside the building. We aren’t allowed inside.
- Massive amounts of sanitizing, including with a Halo fogger (professional sanitizing equipment).
- No more than 10 people in a room at a time.

I’m not sure what they’ll do when more kids are allowed back. Right now they have maybe 60 kids there total, across 16 classrooms, out of the 250 who normally go.

As for playgrounds, they have 2 dedicated playgrounds, so it isn’t an issue for us.
