I am choosing 2, but will be staying with my parents so we have some help during the day. First option seems really bad for the kids

Option 2-not for months. Maybe 2-3 weeks to get away. Pay nanny.

Can your parents help? Stay with them or rent nearby. If you both self quarantine and order groceries, etc you reduce the risk of getting the virus.

Have you found this dream summer vacation home? Because I haven't. I actually dont have housing right now and have been searching for that. What sites does anyone recommend?

In your case, I would choose 1 because it's better to stay put in your home in the middle of a pandemic and because you have childcare.

Yep, this. It's a pipe dream to think you are going to tag-team a two-year-old near water and not be massively stressed by it.

Also, do you really want to be "somewhere rural/beachy" if one of you gets sick? Even if you're not sick with this virus? You have zero idea if there is decent health care nearby. News flash: Rural America is not particularly strong on health care.

And finally...there are so many posts on these forums about "should we find a place at the beach/in the woods/rural area and just hide away all summer." Those kinds of rentals are going to go fast and/or go for huge bucks.

Have you tried working FT with a two year old? Where do you think those 16 hours a day (8x2) will come? Every day?

I have done this for six weeks and wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Add a pool and just forget it.

ITA plus will loose Nanny if you are not paying her and if you’re paying her, costs $$$

#1. You both can’t work full-time with an unattended 2 year old - especially in someone else’s home and with a pool right outside.


The nanny can take the kids outside during the week under option #1, can’t she?

#2 only works with a sitter. The 2 yo will need constant supervision, especially if there are waterways nearby.

Which would you choose for summer and why? Have 2 kids, ages almost 2 and 6.

1) Stay in fairly small apartment with no outdoor space but have nanny come back at some point to help with kids. There will be no camp for older one so nanny will need to entertain both somehow all day (and kids rarely play together) while DH and I will hide in our room most of the day to get work done (both work FT).

2) Rent a house somewhere rural/beachy with a pool but nanny will not be able to come with us so DH or I will need to entertain both kids while also trying to work FT. Maybe we can find a local college sitter to help a bit, but at least kids can play outside and explore nature, swim and we would have more space.
