Businesses also have the option to replace parents who are no longer able to come in due to school closures with childless people. They have all summer to do so.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who will fill those positions but they will probably leave as soon as they find something else so this will be an ongoing issue.

If school continues online for the next however many years, won’t there be a massive lay off of teachers? Why are they not more worried about their jobs?

Because there is a massive number of students who are not engaged in the slightest and public education is a right for everyone. Those of us trying to reach those kids will continue to do trying to remove the barriers and obstacles just to deliver some kid of education to the neediest and hardest to reach to students. It would help if you would home school yours since you know exactly what approach to take.

I agree. I'm a para and I am worried about my job but my most pressing concern right now is my health and my family. I'll worry about the job when it comes to that.

I hope you understand that when you dismiss people’s concerns about dying of the virus due to a lack of precautions that you are showing how little you care about others. That’s very sad and I hope you aren’t sharing that with your children.
The stunning lack of regard for the well being for the people who work with your kids all day makes me want to go out of my way to please you even less.

Pay cuts are certainly a possibility but isn’t that true for everyone? I mean who isn’t worried about their job? Most people do not want to return to their offices right now. Not sure why you are singling out teachers unless you have some sort of axe to grind.

If they decide that schools should be year round or longer days or whatever plan they come up with, many of the aspects of teaching that I find attractive would be gone. I would leave the field. Being around kids all day is exhausting. I already wake up at 5am and leave my house by 6 every day for my teaching job. If I’m getting out at 6pm then my day has become unmanageable and I have no time to plan or to live my own life. The quality of instruction would go way down.

One of the reasons I became a teacher and not a lawyer or a doctor is that I want to be home to make dinner. I want to go to yoga in the evenings. I want to play with my kids in the summer time. People choose certain career paths for money and certain career paths for other reasons. Everyone doesn’t have to run themselves into the ground just because you choose to do so to make $200,000 a year. I’m happy to live a simpler life so I can actually enjoy my time.

I don't think online elementary is a permanent solution; I think if virus concerns continue then we actually need more teachers for smaller in-person classes (possibly hired privately if the county can't do it).

However social distancing and masks in 30-kid elementary classes is also not going to work and if I were a teacher (I'm not) I likely would want to postpone reopening until there was a realistic plan.
