Right but if she gives up the spot in July, she's not taking it from anyone. And, the person who accepts the spot in July is more likely to be someone who doesn't have another option, so you could argue that that's more helpful.

That other person will lose a depsit and maybe full tuition because they needed their child to be somewhere, and OP is sitting on the free option.

Only if they choose to. Maybe that person will decline and someone who doesn't have an option will take the spot.

People are allowed to change their mind. Enroll now, evaluate, then if you change your mind, unenroll. That is the system.

If you’re not completely sure, then enroll! You aren’t taking a spot from anyone. Waitlists move through October. Even if they didn’t, it’s your spot to do what you need to do for your family.

but if you know by July, there is still time for another person to get that spot from the waitlist.

If there is any chance you will take the spot, you can just enroll. No downside. Just try not to forget to un-enroll later and ideally long before school starts!

No downside.

Matched at pre-k we were iffy at and we don't have a great waitlist spot anywhere else. We will likely stay with our private daycare or do something in home due to covid, but we are not completely sure yet and probably won't be until closer to the start of the school year.

Other than not releasing a wait list spot earlier for anyone behind us, is there a downside to enrolling and then dropping out in July?
