I don't like teaching at a distance but I like not having a commute. I would love 4 longer days and 1 day off.

+100. Figure out how to get the kids back in school safely, a la Denmark. Make that the focus, not lame distance learning.

Elementary kids not all grades. They also only have 10 kids per classroom which is not currently possible in nearly any US school... So apples and oranges.

All for it if ya want to spend millions on putting trailers on school lots and government property. Hiring hundreds of more teachers and lots of supplies... So we can have 10-12 students in each class, plenty of cleaning every night. Months paid sick leave for any and all staff. Sure let do that.

Unfortunately it’s really late in the school year to make any major changes. By the time park learning or something gets up and running it’ll be mid may. The school year is basically over at this point so either extend it or plan for the fall

Death of caregivers, death of siblings, deaths of entire communities who who have pre-existing conditions. But who cares about that right?

There's almost no evidence that kids pass corona onto adults. Who cares about that, right? If Denmark can figure out how to re-open school safely, the US can, too. Think outside the box- conduct classes in parks where possible. Copenhagen's parks are currently full of kids taking classes. Anything is better than pretending that this distance learning set up is working well.

I was thinking 7:30-12:00 and 12:30-5:00 so there’s no lunch period.

My health and the health of my students because of inequality. Hard pass!

The school systems should be working on providing more technology, meals or whatever. Our health is just as important as someone’s right to equality.

What about a longer school day to account for fewer days of school?

I agree with you on the thinking. I also wonder if there will be staggered class change times which could affect how long kids are in school.

That is an interesting idea but would lead to some inefficiencies with teachers- for instance I only teach 9th and 10th graders so I would have no classes Thursday and Friday. But I hope DCPS is trying to figure this type of plan out now because it will involve a lot of moving pieces.

Initially I thought they could go by grade

Monday/Wednesday 9th and 10th
Tuesday/Thursday 11th and 12th
Remote Learning for everyone Friday (Teachers at home too allowing for disinfecting schools)

This would also allow for smaller classes, but only if teacher staffing is increased. That’s likely not in the budget.

Some classes are mixed grade levels, so that won’t work.
