College are going to give a big pass to any grades from Spring, 2020 so I would worry about it less this year than any other year. Also, MCPS hasn't yet announced how quarter 3 grades will figure into GPA.

I didn't know they treated language different from math... are you sure about that?

Any other year this is NOT true. Quarter grades of A and B average out to an A NOT semester grades.

Once you have a semester grade it is never averaged except in the GPA.

This year they haven't announced how they are going to deal with spring semester.

There are lots of ideas, some even involve using fall semester grades as some part of the spring, so who knows.....

Rules changed starting with the current 7th grade class.

“For students who entered Grade 6 prior to the 2018–2019 school year, the final grade and credit for high school courses successfully completed in middle school are reported on the high school transcript and included in the calculation of the student’s cumulative GPA. For students who enter Grade 6 during or after the 2018–2019 school year, the final grade and credit earned for high school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be reported on the high school transcript, but will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA, unless requested by the parent/guardian or the student. If the student is an ineligible student as defined in MCPS Regulation JEA-RB, Enrollment of Students. The option to include such courses in cumulative GPA will take place after completion of the course during the 2020–2021 school year.”

It is my understanding that HS courses taken in MS do count in the cumulative GPA for MCPS. My kids are in HS now, but it is my understanding that you can also now ask that MS grades be expunged from your child's transcript. I would email your child's counselor. You can also retake a class in HS and have that grade replace the grade earned during MS.

OP thanks for asking the question. My DS also has the same situation and I'm hoping for some clarity. Are the MS grades included in the cumulative GPA calc for HS or are the MS grades simply shown on the HS transcript but not included in the HS GPA calc?

The A and B will average out to an A on the high school transcript I believe. As for the poster that said colleges don’t look at MS grades that true if u are taking middle school classes but these are high school classes being offered in MS.

My kid got her only C in a foreign language in middle school.

The only way for that grade not to drag down her high school GPA was to retake the same class in high school. With a competent teacher, she got an A .

We're fairly new to MCPS and trying to figure out what to do about DC's grades from 8th grade (math and foreign language).

My understanding is that it's optional to have the foreign language grade moved to the H.S. transcript? If so, is the idea only to do this if BOTH semester grades are As? (DC will have an A and a B). What about Geometry? DC has the same grades, but I believe that the only way to not have the grades transfer over is to retake the class, which DC doesn't want to do. But, is the class weighed more than the foreign language because its classified as "honors?"

Obviously, we're new to all this. Any input welcome!
