But which schools will they go to? Is the city going to permit kids to take an unnecessary 45 minute trip on the Metro with transfers? Or will they require kids to attend schools that are walkable and less crowded? Safety for all vs equity for a for a few.

Only some kids are going back to school. There is sufficient space or staffing to maintain necessary social distancing in schools. Schools will continue to offer virtual/online options.

totally agree. Every option the schools look at should address overcrowding while others remain underutilized

Well, if the mayor cares about saving lives, she will require kids to attend a neighborhood school they can walk to. These ridiculous boundaries for Deal and Wilson that require use of Metro and buses are going to infect a lot of kids unnecessarily, and probably kill a lot of parents/grandparents in the process. Time for a change.

Building space is less an issue than staffing. Even if a school had twice as many classrooms as needed they'd then need twice as many teachers. Our kids will be in school part-time and working from home part time. God help us all.

I think a better question is, what to do when staff and teachers all get sick at the same time?

CDC has released preliminary guidelines for schools recommending 6 feet between desks, lunch in classrooms, closed playgrounds, etc. How can any school meet the distancing criteria unless they are significantly under capacity? It seems that staggered in-school days would help, but that would require distance learners to attend in-school classes virtually, which is quite different from what's going on now. DCPS and schools across the country have a lot to think about, and it's got to be hard for them given the lack of precedent. I worry that our kids are going to suffer from a lack of learning for 1-2+ years while expectations remain low due to the challenges schools are experiencing. Homeschooling is something I never considered and thought was somewhat kooky, but it's starting to look like a more reasonable option at this point.
