Yes because they haven't been screwed over enough this year.

So because one kid doesn’t want to start school online in the fall they get to screw another kid out of a spot in a college altogether? How is that fair? Play the hand your dealt.

They are playing the hand they are dealt. Their play is to defer. You act like that is what the seniors want. They want to go to school in Fall 2020. Deferring is a sacrifice.

Why can't your junior take a bit of the hit? They will get to be a second semester senior, prom, etc. Come on, teach your kid to be a good team member - they need to carry their share of the burden. They are basically getting to skate by on half of what is supposed to be the hardest academic year (open book APs, pass/fail classes).

And that could be deferring. That’s an option that many colleges offer and has always been an option. Don’t see how that doesn’t fall into playing the hand your dealt.

This is a great response!

Colleges are telling students offered places from their wait lists that they cannot defer attendance. That suggests that they're getting a significant number of deferral requests from students already admitted. But that doesn't mean colleges are going to automatically approve those requests. And what are students who defer going to do for a semester or a year with travel restricted and jobs and internships scarce?

There will also be a drop in international students and overall numbers attending college. Finances will play a role. But there’s no way to know how it will all play out for current juniors.

Colleges need to start in the fall. Let’s hope things improve to get us there.

I cannot see a scenario where colleges grant carte blanche deferrals.

So 20% of all college kids are going to take the year off to live in mommy's basement and work at Mickey D's? Nice, good life choice!

Most schools are going to strictly limit deferrals. They can’t afford not to.

It would seem that spots will be very tight for the class of 2021 at many schools--probably down 20%? (that's the figure that I keep reading of the percentage of kids who want to defer). Some schools will limit the number but
I think others are not putting a cap on the number.

There are a dozen threads about this.

No one knows what will happen. Another thread doesn’t change that.

That's why student who want to defer should not be allowed to do so. They should have to reapply next year.

I assume that, if lots of seniors defer and hold places for next year, there will be fewer slots for next year's applicants. Right?
