My mother wanted to be called Nana with my father to be Poppa. However, my husband is French. Nana in French means something like chick, babe or broad, so didn't seem the best choice. Also the kids call my husband Papa, so Poppa was out.
My sister's kids did call them those names, and mine called them something different.
I always thought that nana sounded like banana.

What is different about a parent having to call his/her own mother "grandmother" vs something like Nana? No parent is ever going to say to their child: Go sit next to my mom. She'll say, Go sit next to Grandma/Nana/Whatever. So why in the world does the name matter? You are showing that you simply don't like what you perceive to be "ridiculous" names.

+1. My parents are divorced so my kids have to say three different names for their grandmothers and it drives me insane. I can't wait to just be "grandma"

My parents were in their late 40's when my now-27yo was born, and they are Grammy and Grampy. Even now, in their 70's, they are not the formal 'Grandmother' and 'Grandfather' type.
My friend's active 80 yo mom is 'Gram'.
BIL and SIL are Nona and Poppy.

I recently learned that I am going to be a grandmother, and I just turned 50. I cannot imagine being called Grandma or similar at this age. What do your grandchildren call you?
