Would suggest making sure the printer can get on to your home network (via wifi or ethernet if you have that). You won't always be printing from attached machine so gives you flexibility.

This. I was going to recommend a cheap Samsung laser printer, ours has been a workhorse at our office for years, but it looks like they don’t make them anymore. HP has some inexpensive laser printers.

We have a Brother color laser all in one at home and the toner lasts forever.

Weirdly it's unavailable from Amazon now and costs more from other sellers than what I paid, about $60.

We also have a Canon Pixma, and are very happy with it. It’s an older model that cost $300-400 when we bought it a few years back. We print a lot of stuff, including photos, and so for us the ink cost did become an issue...we made the switch to generic ink eventually, and so far so good.

We picked up this one through the Wirecutter rec. Works great. Original toner lasted two years of intermediate use.

I used to have a Canon inkjet which was pretty solid. It died and when I went to look at printers - all the Canons just looked like junk. I bought a Brother inkjet and literally just threw it away 2 months later - horrible. Horrible.

I wanted an inkjet that did double sided and was relatively small. The HP ones had good reviews and seemed solid but they were HUGE!

Ended up with an Epson - I paid about $200 more for it then either of my low end ones before but it is awesome. Works well - no problems - I've had it about two years now and still haven't had to replace the ink. It's big selling point was that you would spend less on ink. No cartridges - just canisters that you fill up. I still have half the supply I got when I bought it. Does double sided very well which is something I need and used to jam my other two.

I have the Epson ET-3700.

I did quite a bit of research before I bought that and I am very happy with it.

This is the one I got. I would guess there's a newer model. But there's also generic ink that works great and is cheap. I've been pleasantly surprised.

I am on my second Brother inkjet all-in-one. The first one lasted like 7 years. The ink is expensive but all the inks are expensive.

OP again. The number of options is seriously overwhelming and confusing. I'm just looking for basic 8.5 x 11 paper, black and white print capability (or is it called grayscale?), affordable widely available ink, not too large in size.

That's it. 98% of my home printing will be school stuff for the kids.
