DH is a professor there and I just asked him if he had any idea. He does not, although to echo another PP they obviously really hope to be able to open.
That said I don't think you're crazy for asking, OP. College rentals are tricky at the best of times. Sorry that other PP was kind of rude about it. It's natural to want to plan, even in a time of such uncertainty (probably even more so!).
They don't know. It depends on what the government announces. I think all colleges/universities are in a holding pattern, just like everyone else. What I know is that they absolutely hope to open in the fall.
UMD has stated that they will be announcing the decision for Summer II and the Fall session on or before June 15.
Let that be a signal to you to wait and see, and drop one question-mark-level of anxiety. They'll do what they can, when they can. I don't get what people don't get about this; NO ONE CAN POSSIBLY KNOW YET what the fall will look like.
All colleges are hoping to open if they are allowed. They are at the mercy of the government, whichever entity has authority over DC. Keep an eye on what the relevant govt authority is saying about future plans; that's all we can do at the moment.
The question you might ask yourself is whether your student would be at home for online classes or whether you'd consider letting your student do online classes from the apartment.
