My teenagers’ bedrooms have doors. I shut them. Done.

I enjoyed decorating when my son was young too. He's 13 and his room is as tacky as any other teen boy's room, lol. Let them discover their own tastes. My room was plastered with Shaun Cassidy and Scott Baio posters when I was a teen. I certainly don't have that kind of stuff now.

100% control. My kid told me to do what I wanted. I gave him a few choices of things I knew he'd like and that was it. We used the Philips Hue strip lights in the room. They seemed safer than Christmas lights. Having fun lights is great. But, if you don't want them looking bad, do the philips strips and you can put them in mounts and they look nice.

I feel sad for your children that hanging Christmas lights is something that’s causing an issue.

My kids are too little for this now, but as they get older I would let them paint murals on their walls, decorate however they want and make their rooms their own. That’s part of the fun of being a kid!

If they’re the old kind of Christmas lights, they use a lot of electricity and I’d offer to replace them with LEDs.

There’s no way we’re going to re-paint frequently, but otherwise, the kids can do what they want to decorate their rooms within a reasonable budget.

Let them decorate it how they want as long as:
- it's not majorly inappropriate
- they're responsible enough to clean and maintain their room

Whoa. Around 5 when my kid started having an opinion on things, he gained full control of his room decorations. I can’t imagine touching a teen’s room. In a few years when they go to college you can redecorate as you desire.

Do you mean the white lights that are "a thing" right now?

My own kids don't have them in their rooms but, as long as there are no safety issues, I wouldn't care if they did.

My teenagers have posters and whatnot on their walls. Definitely not picture perfect Pottery Barn-esque. And, no, I don't think it's my place to get involved in their decorating (or lack thereof).

Don't be a control freak. As long as it's not truly inappropriate (e.g., porn hanging on the walls), let them have one space in the hours that is theirs.

My 11 year old and 13 year old have their rooms however they like. My 13 year old has random Christmas lights and a lot of her artwork up. My 11 year old is more of a minimalist - a football jersey and soccer poster are the only things on his walls.

They control it 100%.
