Infection rates overall are probably slowing down a lot. The difference is that the more you test, the more positives you get. The best number to track is hospitilazations, ventilators in use, ICU beds available and death rate. These are the numbers that need to keep going down. Thats why it doesnt make sense to say "we have to see the infection rate go down" when testing is still be rationed and limited. No tracking of hot spots or sharing maps of infection zones.

Nursing homes. Notice that information is not as forthcoming as it could be.

This. The whole point was to not overwhelm hospitals. Hospitals are practically empty. It’s time to move on and address the economic suffering.

Amen.

Ah yes but now it’s time to move the goalposts from “not overwhelming hospitals” to “making sure no one gets sick.” Hence the need for 2+ more months of all this. Apparently.

You really can't figure out who cares?

I know too many people care but are missing the point that the number is dramatically lower than what would be sufficient to overwhelm the health care system which was the entire goal of this pause

Do you understand why hospitals aren’t overwhelmed? Because it sure doesn’t sound like it.

Spread has been along the I-95 corridor. There are construction sites in NoVa that haven't shut down and are full of construction workers who cross the bridge every day from Maryland.

So remember that the number of people showing symptoms now, going to health care centers (ERs, Urgent Cares hospitals) and being tested were exposed 7-14 days ago. This was before Easter. There were kids that went to Spring break in Florida and came home about 15-21 days ago who were infected but asymptomatic. They came through airports and potentially infected airport workers. There are people who went to stores then without PPE, but just trying to social distance. I know from my own trips to the store a couple of weeks ago that there were many people who were not wearing masks and although people tried to social distance, once in the aisles, they were not paying attention. The people in the aisles shopping for items on the shelves were spaced out, but then there would be a couple of people who would just walk down the aisle and weave around the other shoppers. And people who touched the touch screens and card readers and then did not sanitize their hands. And there were people out biking and jogging who were maintaining social distancing...about 90-95% of the time, but would pass by people within 6 feet, etc. There were people who pulled up to the gas station and used the pump handle that someone else had just used 5 minutes before and were long gone, but the second person did not sanitize before and/or after. There were people then who thought that going to relatives houses for Easter dinner was okay as long as they had less than 10 people and their relatives did not show symptoms. Hopefully the longer this goes on, the more people will take it seriously, but this is a very contagious disease and we often do not see the results of careless behavior for 7-10 days and that is long time and easy for people to think that the casual exception they made was okay.

Access to testing is still a huge issue -- you need a doctor's prescription -- and I read somewhere that there are some reporting lags for the private labs. So the daily totals are a little wonky.

We don't have enough testing to know true numbers.

This may be more appropriate for the Health forum, but I am surprised that the rate in FFX is still increasing? What more can be done to have R0 below 1?

Is there not enough social distancing? I know we need more testing. I also know nursing homes are being hit hard, but that can't explain these daily increases. Is there a hotspot somewhere?
