Op here. Thanks for these suggestions! I sent a big gift basket of non perishable treats. Am glad that I did that because the baby was sick and the family had to go back to the hospital for a few days. They got the package when they returned home and nothing was spoiled or anything.

Amazon gift card is always appreciated. Agree with PP - even with a full registry, you don't know what you really need for baby until you need it! So I was always buying new things for my twins in the first few weeks.
Otherwise, I agree that meal delivery would be a great way of saying "here's something that I hope can help you guys out during these stressful times particularly when you guys are by yourselves!" For recent friends who gave birth, I have given them a $100 Uber Eats gift certificate.
The best gift I got was my friend who organized a meal train for us during those first 6 weeks. She put together a schedule and all of our friends volunteered to bring us meals every few days (and big meals too so that we would have leftovers!). It was a godsend as having twins made it hard for DH and I to spend any extra time on things like cooking. And both of our families are also not on the continental US.

Amazon gift card. With her baby being premature they may not have had everything ready for the baby and will be ordering a lot from amazon. Heck I had my baby two weeks past the due date and I was still ordering things from amazon at 3:00am during night feedings.

Edible Arrangements is shit quality though. I'd go with a CSA type of box or something like that.

I live several states away from a former colleague who just had her first child a few weeks premature and with no family ( other than her and her partner) in the US. I want to send something to brighten the day but something useful might be better than flowers. Any ideas?
