Do you mind sharing which school for K? We have been super disappointed with the content of my DC's private K distance learning.

We do worksheets first thing in the morning. They are totally ok with it.

They play online chess or math for an hour after worksheets.

We then play a board game or do a craft in the afternoon.

We take many walks. There is outside bike riding.

The kids are helping out with more chores.

The kids miss their school and their teachers. But they are obedient at home. Sometimes there is whining but not a lot. They seem to be bonding well together.

I can’t share this with other parents because it seems like everyone else is struggling while we are doing really well. The kindergartener needs more help with instructions but that is about it. I feel really guilty about it- it seems like some people might be getting divorced.

I pretty much abandoned it.

My kids are in elementary school. They have to do their math, but other than that, I let them choose what they want to do for school. Once they pick something, we look up effective ways to teach it to elementary schoolers. I am not going to make them go to zoom meetings and do worksheets. If that’s what they want to do, great. My second grader likes some of the worksheets. But if they would rather spend their time sitting outside watching a bird build it’s nest or learn how to build a kite, then they should do that. They can take photos, look up background information, etc.

Going really well. Our school closed earlier than the public schools and started online learning about a week after closing. A few bumps in the beginning with teachers scheduling classes that overlapped or conflicted. That has been sorted out. This week is spring break and only the kids in AP classes have scheduled homework. My daughter is working on her AP reviews and her thesis.

Some teachers are better than others at engaging the 3rd graders and running an online class. My son loves art, but the art teacher hasn’t quite figured out how to keep all the kids engaged online; this is the class my son screws around in most...chatting with friends, constantly getting up, etc. Math, Spanish, Grammar, and Literature are all great. Piano, not great — he loves this teacher IRL, but online lessons aren’t going well. Martial arts — the teacher is struggling and often cranky, so that sucks for the kids. And the science teacher started a “read aloud” elective; turns out he’s a really fun, engaging teacher when not teaching science! He reads 1-2 chapters of a fiction book each week and the kids are all begging for more at the end of each session. “Homeroom” is fun; the teacher splits them into separate Zoom breakout rooms and the kids chat or play Roblox or whatever they want.

Why are you giving them a choice? They keep the same routine they had for attending school. You should have cleared a room to make it a classroom and nothing else. They get dressed as though they are going to school. This is your responsibility and, obviously, you have failed miserably!

Reading even 1 book at home seems more beneficial at that age than the Zoom meetings.

It’s tough with my second grader. She’s struggling to concentrate and sit still for just a 20- minute video session with her class. Pretty sure it’ll be a disaster when they move up to an hour. She does fine working with me on short assignments spread throughout the day, but whines and complains about independent reading or too many assignments at once.

I don’t blame her. In her mind, school is where she did work; home is where she played. And I can’t keep a set schedule with her because I work full time, so that doesn’t help. Basically, we’re doing the best we can.

Mine runs away and throws a tantrum. Young enough that I worked out an alternative with the teacher...

Online education is not right for very little kids!!!

My shy, extroverted, not academically strong 3rd grader is really struggling. She misses her teachers terribly, she is great at school, loves to participate, gets along with everyone, but a home she fights me on everything. She is definitely a kid who does better on a team. I think she would probably benefit from repeating the year, but I doubt the school would let us do that.

Kindergartener is doing fine and talks to his teacher every day and does a zoom session with his group. But he misses school.

My 2nd grader has been great and knows how to complete all her assignments and even though there are essentially 2 ways to do everything she is figuring it out and knows when to ask for help. She also looks forward to seeing her friends and teacher for a short time each morning. I actually think she participates more because it feels like she is in front of less people when she is on a computer.

It's terrible timing for DD in K though. She doesn't want to participate, is frustrated over reading, and her computer skills aren't very good yet. I think she probably does better in an environment with less distractions and temptations in general.

My children don’t want to go back to school and want to do stay at home schooling. We pay for private school and definitely not getting our monies worth but I’m okay with that due to what’s going on. Teachers are wonderful but it is what is. Ugh, my kids are not taking school serious anymore.
