The families i know with 5 kids are Orthodox Jews or Mormons.

I hope i never hear any woman who has birthed 3 or more kids ever call herself an environmentalist, because I will give her an earful.

Wrong. The Catholic “idiots” gave up huge families in the 1960’s, Grandma.

I’m not the pp or anti Catholic, but every single large family I know in my area is Catholic, and not idiots- all well educated and UMC.

Anyway, to answer your question, OP, the biggest sacrifice I have noticed with these large families is lack of travel. They might all drive somewhere for a vacation, but never fly. Also, the families tend not to let each kid sign up for as many activities as most other kids in our area, because it’s not logistically feasible. We have friends with 5 kids, and they are financially very well off, but putting that many kids through private high schools and college is... a lot. Many families would have to make some hard choices when it comes to paying for education.

I have a friend with 4, not Jewish or Catholic, another friend with 6 and another friend with 5 (3 birthed, 2 step children).

They all have lots of fun. None of the moms work a traditional 9-5pm. One friend is on public assistance and she escaped domestic violence from the father. The other two have husbands who are paid very well.

I always enjoy time with them. I get more time to myself as my daughter is more entertained. I grew up in a family of 4. It seems normal to me. I feel so much guilt for only having 1 child.

If I had a partner who wanted a big family, I would have kept on trying to have babies until I physically couldn't.

I don't think anyone is an idiot for a big family. Our world will change and people will be more important than material things. Right now, I would love to have a big family to take some of the pressure off of me and give my kid more people to bounce energy off of. When I had people living with me, my kid really thrived.

Bigger families for the future!! The planet can handle it

I think the only families I know with 5 are Jews. I’m a Catholic and I think the biggest family I know is 4 (excepting blended families in case of remarriage).

OP I have a friend who tried for a third and ended up with twins as well. 4 is different then 5 but I understand your concerns.

OP from the people I know with 5+ kids, one challenge is the age spread. If you have twins, that won't be an issue.

Our neighbors have 5. He's a fed, she homeschools. (Well, homeschools 4, the 5th is a toddler). They own a home in the same development I do with 1 child and 2 working parents, so clearly they make it work!

Back story - we have 3 and want to have one more but I have this irrational fear of getting pregnant with twins (twins don’t even run in my family). We would be fine with 4 kids but I’m a major planner and the .00000001% chance that we have twins and get 5 is scaring me. I also never see 5 kids these days so if you have 5, what’s it like? Do both parents work and what does your outside help consist of? (Outside of financial reasons I want to make sure we would even be able to properly nurture and show attention to all 5).
