Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to announce that after a national search, Aaron Hill, currently Middle School Director of Student Activities at Woodward Academy in College Park, Georgia, will be our next Head of Middle School.
Aaron has a long list of achievements as an educator, having been a teacher and an administrator to both Middle and Upper School students. A native of York, Pennsylvania, Aaron has been described by colleagues as someone of high moral character who is a strong communicator and a well-organized consensus builder who leads with kindness and is passionate about supporting students and faculty. Aaron assumes the role of Head of Middle School on July 1, 2020.
“St. Andrew’s has an international reputation for excellence and leadership,” Aaron said. “Becoming a member of this community of learners is a distinct honor and privilege.”
After graduating from William Penn Senior High School in York where he met his wife, Tina, Aaron served 22 years in the United States Army. He served three tours of duty at the Armed Forces School of Music where his teaching career began. After retiring from service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Christopher Newport University and went to work at Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, Virginia, where he served as Dean of Students and Head of Upper School. During his time there, he earned a Master of Science in Management from Troy University.
In 2008, Aaron left Hampton Roads Academy with an eye on returning to the classroom. He took over as Director of Bands at Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Virginia where he chaired the Fine & Performing Arts Department and was named Teacher of the Year. In 2014, he relocated to College Park, located just south of Atlanta, to become Middle School Band Director at Woodward Academy where his daughter teaches Spanish to eighth graders. In 2018, he added the newly-formed role of Middle School Director of Student Activities to his list of responsibilities.
“I believe you have to love kids in general to be most effective in helping them learn and navigate life,” Aaron said. “Middle Schoolers have a unique desire to learn. That makes learning exciting and fun.”
Aaron has spent much of his life focused on issues of equity and social justice, including serving as a facilitator at the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference earlier this month in Seattle, and taking part in the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Southern Poverty Law Center’s educational and anti-bias programs.
“I am thrilled to know that Aaron will be leading our middle school,” said Dr. Rodney Glasgow, the current Head of Middle School. “Having worked with Aaron before, I affirm that he will bring a warmth, wisdom, and authenticity that will only enhance our wonderful division. I look forward to working closely with him in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition, and I smile knowing that the Middle School will be in good, accomplished, and highly capable hands!”
Aaron and Tina, a registered nurse, have three children and eight grandchildren. Their oldest son, Aaron Jr., teaches civil engineering at the United States Military Academy. His middle child, son Ahmond, lives in the Washington, D.C., area and manages two DaVita locations in the District. His youngest child, Alisha, teaches at Woodward Academy.
“Tina and I feel honored, privileged, and eager to become members of the St. Andrew’s family and the greater surrounding communities,” Aaron said. “We were married in the chapel at Ft. Meade, our first assignment in the Army. The location brings us closer to our two sons, six of our grandchildren, and our extended family in nearby York. Throughout our travels we have always had a special affinity for the Washington, D.C., area. After meeting the students, faculty, parents, and administrators at St. Andrew’s, we are convinced this is the perfect school and community for us.”
I want to recognize and thank our faculty and staff search committee, as well as the parent advisory group led by Rana Alarapon, Martha Martin and Kellie Bickenbach, for their help in attracting someone of Aaron’s character and ability to St. Andrew’s.
I am sure you sense my tremendous excitement at finding someone of Aaron’s character and background to step into the role of Head of Middle School and build on Rodney's strong legacy. I expect Aaron to visit St. Andrew’s this spring in advance of joining our staff full time in July. We were accepted to St Andrews for middle school this year and we met the new head at the admitted families event. He was an experienced gentleman with an education and military background. From atlanta? Not sure if I’m remembering that last part correctly. I also cannot recall his name, but can confirm he’s there and working!
