Live-in nanny here. You are being overly generous. She’s normally a live-in, but moved out to avoid working, yet still wants to be paid. Nope, no way.

+1 She can be with her family on LWOP.

We are paying full salary through the end of April ($29 per hour, for our full time nanny who has been with us for years) and have offered at that point to either pay her a stipend of $400 per week or, if she chooses, let her go so she can seek other employment. We just can't afford to keep paying her at that point and can't have her come. No easy answers here.

I think this was a decent perspective a month ago, when it was not immediately clear that we’d be homebound for months. It’s hard to justify paying people their full salaries when they cannot do their job remotely. And as far as our own compensation goes, it will definitely be impacted. Lots of employers are doing lay offs, pay cuts, and at best, withholding or diminishing bonuses. It gets unsustainable to keep paying nannies at full salary when they’re not actually working, you’re trying to do their job and your own, and your own income is being potentially impacted. It’s obviously a personal decision but for many people, childcare is a large, substantial expense that’s not sustainable without the actual help.

I think you were being too generous. What was her reason for not living with you, even though she usually does? She doesn’t seem to care about your family at all. I would have fired her.

Her reason was that she wanted to be with family/home. She went to stay with a relative. She would live with relatives during the weekend normally. We quarantined a few weeks earlier than most people, and she was still attending church, which we were uncomfortable with. Once her group shut down, we re-offered her to quarantine in our home after a period of isolation, and she still declined. At that point we felt that she would rather stay home and not work. But we’re trying to be understanding. We know some people being more generous than we are, but mostly for live out nannies. The other live in’s I know of have all stayed with their employer families.

Presumably OP is being paid to actually work.

A couple more weeks and then we'll reevaluate. If I could create a totally closed loop with my family and my nanny, I would still be having her come. But I can't. She lives with her MIL who works at a grocery store and her husband who works in a factory, so I'm worried about exposure.

We agreed to pay her through April and then will discuss from there.
