A way to tone down the country-cutesyness could be to cheat towards cranberry reds and tealish blues, and to use patterns that don't belong with Americana (think more botanical) and avoid checks, plaids, stripes, and contrasting piping.

I feel like Kathryn Ireland fabrics might be a good jumping off point for you. They have a lot of the colors you're looking for in patterns that reference different cultures and so feel less "Connecticut 1985" to me.

I think your examples seem more Connecticut 1985 than original house posted. They seem fussy.
