Do some states support their flagship more than others?

Most people from Michigan root for either UM or Mich State, but everyone knows UM is in general the better school. If you’re from SE Michigan, it’s a bit harder to get in because UM wants ‘geographic diversity.’ I grew up 30 minutes from Ann Arbor but only 2 people from my high school were accepted to UM.

The only people who root for Sparty are people who live right near there. Otherwise it's all UM.

DH went to Michigan and lived in Ann Arbor from the time he started high school. He has a HUGE amount of UM pride. It's definitely the academic pride of the state, as it should be. It's an excellent school.

Within Michigan, UofM is viewed as an elite school by most people, especially those with higher education themselves. My high-school educated family know that UofM is better than, say, Michigan State but don’t entire understand HOW much better it is. Generally, yes, people within the state understand UMich is a gem and we are lucky to be able to qualify for in state tuition.

While my DC was OOS, my impression from her MI resident friends is that getting in to Michigan is a big deal.

I lived in Michigan (now in DC)
State Gem - Great School

There are programs at Michigan Tech, Michigan State that are very good - if not better. But University of Michigan fits your description of category 1 above.

Ohio State no where near any of the others.

Michigan State good for engineering.

The schools you listed vs University of Michigan not in the same league. Going to college goal is to get out and get a job UMichigan by far leaps and bounds better.
