Most Catholics aren't religious extremists.

I had crazy Catholic neighbors. They exist. They had 8 kids whom they home-schooled. It was eye-opening as a Jew. I thought it was only evangelicals.

I'm on episode. It's kind of unrealistic how she magically makes these friends at conservatory, but it is interesting.

I read the book in 2013, and became extremely fascinated by it all. I was living in NYC at the time, and traveled often between NYC and South Florida, so I would see Hasidim frequently — more Lubavitcher than Satmar.

The book is even sadder.

There is a documentary, “One of Us”, on Netflix which is both a moving and deeply disturbing look into the lives and experiences of several members of a Hassidic community in NY. Highly recommend it, though again, disturbing.

I watched two episodes it’s very good so far. Difficult to watch at times.

Since late 18th century in Poland. “Hasid” means pious one. But in the state’s, the community - primarily in the New York boroughs didn’t take off in America until 1940s and 1950s. One of the goals of the ultra orthodox community is to have as many souls as possible to as to replenish what Hitler took. It’s a very difficult life for young women in the community. read up in Hassidim in wiki. SHTISEL (about Hasidim in Israel) is sbout the same culture but a sweeter presentation and very popular as a series right niw. Even the Hasidim who are not supposed to watch TV are secretly watching it on their phones

People unfamiliar with the community have no idea. It’s a huge issue in some parts of NY and NJ. The residents there have been thrown to the wolves because of bloc voting. It’s a cult with a strong understanding of how to get what they need for their community through political means.
