Took me way too long to understand what that meant, LOL. I would think, "How can you be pretty and ugly at the same time?"
But this was just run of the mill older brother teasing, not what others are describing, and I'm sure I gave as good as I got (As an adult, he told me that he never realized he had a big nose until I told him and I had to tell him that his nose is perfectly normal). Only children have some benefits, of course, but one of the benefits of siblings is you learn how to handle teasing. I was the only girl with 4 brothers and there was a lot of teasing.

Yes lol ten years ago I was in college and dating a guy from my hometown who felt the need to send me screenshots of texts from his receptionist calling me ugly. He then added "But don't worry, you aren't ugly." Cool.

I want to give you a hug!!! I know you’ll hear her voice at times but I hope you look in the mirror and really see you. I hope you really see how beautiful you are. I say that because if you think about anyone you really think is beautiful it’s because you love them and their eyes hold special appeal etc.. (it’s a cliche but true). If you really see yourself you’ll know how Beautiful you are!!!

I honestly don't know if I've ever been called ugly. Probably since I'm AA and I grew up in a majority white area.
What sticks with me, though, is that my BFF did ROTC in college and after she graduated and went for her first week of basic training (or whatever it's called - that early part in the military where they yell at you and try to break you), she was told she was so ugly, she was a good reason for birth control.

My brother would call me fat.
And I knew I was the ugly one in the family, because everyone always commented on my sister's beautiful blue eyes (in an ethnic family, where "whiteness" is praised even though people don't like to admit it).
So while no one every outright called me "ugly" there are many other ways it can be told to a person.

And I turned out to be pretty and got tons of male attention. Total whiplash. Those words never leave you though. I was also poor in a rich town and grew to my full height in 5th grade, was the first to get my period...being big and awkward was not good. On the bright side, if I had peaked in prettiness in middle school or early high school then I never would have worked my tail off and gone to Harvard

I was called ugly once in my teens/college by other girls and it's made me so insecure. Everyone else has called me pretty but I'm still shook up about two women I knew as a teenager. Wtf.
