A lot of schools have chromebooks but they are shared between multiple classrooms. PG can not just pass out chromebooks and call it a day. What about Internet? What about parents that may have to go back into the work and no one is home with their child? How would they then get meals? How would the chromebooks get returned? Too many what ifs and too soon to decide. I have said this before, close schools until the summer. Use the summer to make up the remaining of this school year which is two months. Roll right into the next school year.

So, email the teachers and communicate about your needs. I'm a teacher and I appreciate when my families let me know what is not working for them so I can be responsive. Best of luck to you.

I think that everyone in the country is going to be in the same boat. I wouldn't pull him out of school. I you want to enroll him in a homeschooling program, you don't need to unenroll from PGCPS.
They are figuring it all out. A lot of the schools have Chromebooks and I don't know why they couldn't be distributed to kids who don't have them. I know they are also looking at getting hot spots and low cost internet access set up for families. In my mind, high school students should be the priority.
My child is at Kenmoor TAG and they have been getting assignments daily from their teachers via Google Classroom/Remind/Edmodo. Despite this, I know that there is no way they are going to cover what they are supposed to. I am planning on having some sort of summer camp or homeschooling plan for over the summer.
All the kids in the program are going to be in the same situation so they are going to have to change expectations for next school year.

"Later this week, we will survey all students to determine their technology access, analyze the technology gap and work to close it by distributing devices to students and where possible, covering broadband costs."

-CEO's email today

We'll see how this plays out.

Oh, go away pp.

OP, I have a senior at ERHS. Some stuff is online right now, and some teachers haven't put anything up yet. I wouldn't make any rash decisions right now. It's a weird year. Hang tight.

As far as what to do re: tech access for folks who don't have it, I think this is being discussed. Low cost internet for student households is already a thing, and I hope someone's looking at device access.

All school systems are working on distance learning right now.
If you don't like what they're proposing, homeschool your kid.

I suspect that Prince Georges County will announce very soon that schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year, as Virginia just announced. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on how they will respond.

My kids are older so I'm looking at this from the perspective of a high school student. Do you think the county will be able to offer online instruction? Should I pull my high school junior out of public school and put him in some sort of online homeschool program? Can anyone recommend an online high school program?

Junior year is so hard and so important. My kid is in the SciTech program at Roosevelt and doing well. He has high hopes for college. I want to do what I can to help him keep going. But he would be so sad to leave Roosevelt. I really hope they can make online instruction happen. My son says he does have classmates in the SciTech program who don't have a computer at home. And a larger percentage of ERHS kids who are not in the SciTec program lack computer/internet at home. What can we do?
