My husband is in healthcare as well (not on the front lines but close enough to feel it). I am so sorry to hear this - sending you virtual hugs. To support him, I have been trying to make our homelife as supportive and rejuvenating for him as possible so he can reset and refresh when he is home. It sounds like something out of a 1950s "how to be a good wife" manual but I am consciously trying to be calm, pleasant, have a nice hot meal waiting for him, make light conversation about things other than the coronavirus (although its hard b/c he keeps bring it up so we do talk about it a lot...), etc. etc. I'd welcome other ideas for supporting these heroes.

I can empathize OP. Dh is also a doctor in this area and yes, the situation is horrifically bad.

Doctors, nurses, techs, are going through an awful time. Not enough PPE, they are using the same mask for 1-2 weeks, even while working with COVID19 patients.
There are already several that are sick, many that have been exposed without proper protection, long hours, terrible administration and upper management.

I’m telling everyone I know to please stay home but so many (including people I work with) don’t get it. I really fear for the lives of my husband and his coworkers AND their families (our family) that are/will be inevitably also be exposed.

For every story like OP’s, you can find one where another doctor thinks it’s not too bad. It is what it is.

I have a friend who is a doctor at an ICU in the DMV area. Same reaction as your husband. They are on the front lines of a battle and are being sent forward to fight with swords and pitchforks against an enemy that has machine guns and tanks.

This is my guess. Testing isn't being done fast enough so number of cases is artificially low, but critical patients are swamping the hospitals, even here.

Which state does he work? I take it things are much worse than the number of positive tests show?

This is how bad things have gotten here, in the DMV. My tough, macho Dr. husband, who I've only seen cry once in our 20 year marriage, is a seasoned Doctor (hospitalist). Therefore he is a hospital-based physician and is/will be working in the hospital with Corona patients.

He came home from work crying yesterday. It scared me. He says things are bad already, he and the staff are being worked to the bone, they are all stressed, no one knows proper protocol for treating these patients and protective gear, mistakes are already being made because staff is confused, morale is low, staff are starting to call out sick with CV, and the CV cases are multiplying. He hears from his colleagues at NYC hospitals about how things are going there now and is terrified.

He's terrified of getting the virus since they are being told to reuse protective gear.

This situation is terrible, folks. The doctors are at the point where many of them are freaking out.

I have never seen my husband so stressed. I've never been so stressed/depressed in my life.
