Except they end up finding out anyway. They listen to everything and ask questions about why everything is closed. What are we supposed to tell them about why they can't see their friends?

OP, it's tough but kids learn resilience. Resilience helps them cope. They will have future challenges, and experience helps. And it will help them in the future when they can remember this time and remember you handled it well.

I'm talking about how I'm messaging it to my 3 year old. I know children are getting it, but they have mild cases and no children under the age of 9 have died.

There's a difference between talking to a 3 year old about it and discussing it among adults. Surely you must realize this.

Same here. My 3 year old keeps telling me he is worried.

Little kids DO get this illness, why would you tell her otherwise? Then if she gets sick she'll be terrified because she's the only little kid to get it.

If she asks I would tell her the bare basics but stick with people, some people will get it and this is what we're doing to be safe.

So you determine what emotions other people feel? It’s OK for people to feel sad about this. You don’t control other people.

Even my 16 month old is confused. His Daddy is home but locked in the bedroom (working) and he keeps asking for his music teacher and favorite librarian. He also asks to see one little friend he used to play with at the playground. He asks to be held and cuddled much more than he ever has.

It is weird. My 2.5 year old is noticing too. Every time she asks to go somewhere and we tell her it's closed, she lists all the other things that are closed.

"Can we go to the library?" "I'm sorry, the library is closed right now." "The library is closed, daycare is closed, the nature center is closed..."

I don't know how to explain why without giving her anxiety about anything.

I'm sure your kids are saying similar things, but it's just really sad. Asking where her friends went, asking why the playground is closed, etc.

And then out of nowhere, she'll just say in a very matter of fact tone, "Mommy, a lot of people are getting sick." We've tried to explain to her that little kids don't get this illness, so she'll be ok, but I know she's thinking about it.

I don't know what my point is here. It's just tough.
