This is one of the downsides to private housing in university. Same thing would happen if your daughter decided to drop out of school, or if she had to take a medical leave of absence. If your landlord is the university, they will usually work with you. private businesses are a different kettle of fish.

Plus, the money is already budgeted, no? Hopefully you can get comped somehow, but it isn't an unexpected expense.

Yes - you pay your rent. It sucks, but landlords have expenses, mortgage, insurance, and maintenance that still takes place. None of that stopped. You signed a lease.

It's mid-March. She would be finished with school in mid-May right? So that's 2 months. Even if you could break the lease there's probably at least a 2 month penalty.

When my DC lived in an off campus apartment we had to pay for 12 months, including the summer when the apartment was empty.

Don’t pay and you DD credit may be ruined And she’ll end up paying a lot more in Increased penalties for having sub par credit rating — higher interest rates for cars or credit cards, not being able to get certain jobs, more in

If they kicked your daughter out or are highly encouraging her to leave or something (like dorms are doing) then maybe you’d have a point; but otherwise I don’t understand why you think you wouldn’t have to pay rent. Most apartments are owned by private landlords NOT the college. Just because the college shuts down doesn’t mean they do.

You signed the lease. Your daughter has a functional apartment that she could live in — she just chose not to. I’m sorry you’re not getting this but like...ma’am. Think with your head, please.

There may be lease/mortgage deferments coming, but ultimately you still have to pay what you agreed to when you signed the lease.
