It is ridiculous what people think is appropriate in mixed company. We had a couple of friends who would hold hands when they were with us; in front of our children, no less! Needless to say, they are no longer our friends.

My French genes tell me this is normal public (though informal) behavior.
My Japanese genes tell me this is reserved for wild teenagers.
Conclusion: I do it sometimes, although we prefer just sitting side by side on the SAME chair (that way our eyes are level).

Cultural and educational differences, I suppose.

Confused-do you mean your husband's lap? Otherwise, I sit in my husband's lap all the time-both in social gatherings and privately. We are from Europe so I am now wondering if this is a faux pas in America. Now curious to hear other answers.

just want to gauge my reaction to this. twice now, i've seen a neighborhood acquaintance sit in her husband's lap. just during informal get togethers with the kids around.
