Fly her in immediately or she doesn’t fly at all. Don’t put her at risk in a week.

OP here. Sadly, it's over 2000 miles and I think at that point, the risk of driving outweighs the risk of flying.

Coast-to-coast is a 40-41 hour drive. Break that up into four 10-hour days and it certainly is do-able. In her mid-50s? That would be a cake walk. I would much rather do that than fly and I'm 55. She'll be exposed to fewer people, she'll be breathing air not contaminated by anyone else (unless she has a companion), and possible points of further contamination from face-to-face contact are pretty much contained to check-in at a hotel and drive-thru.

Are you (and the posters driving to their parents') not worried about exposure for the older generation? I'd head home in a heartbeat if the alternative were being cooped up in a smaller space with no help, but that feels a bit unfair to my parents who are at higher risk.

Two people aren't going to be able to work at home with little ones and grandma.

I'd definitely do it. We are stripping clothes right inside the front door, then washing hands. I'd take kids out of daycare immediately.

I definitely plan on driving to my parents home and teleworking full time there with my tots. Otherwise I have zero help.

We were going to straight up drive and stay at my parents house, buy a ton of food from Costco, and hunker down there in Chicago burbs.

My parents and I can split the homeschooling and I can get more telework done. My husband is a workaholic so he can stay here or come with - he is a machine at teleworking. He can really tune out everything else. Unf it’s all the time.

OP here. This is kind of my thinking. I've already cleared teleworking during non-business hours, aka when the kids are asleep, so I can take care of them during the day. It's going to suck, but you gotta do these things sometimes.

MIL was scheduled to come out in April and so this is moving her trip up a bit...the thought my spouse has is that if she doesn't travel RIGHT NOW she won't be able to for the unforeseen future.

I would totally plan on this. Maybe wait another couple of weeks before she comes out, but I envision schools and many places of work are going to shut down soon.

My spouse is involved with A LOT of the contingency planning for a large agency...so the virus is all he talks about. He really thinks we're moving towards mandatory telework and wants to take the kids out of daycare, and fly in his mother immediately to help with our kids. I don't want to unnecessarily burden her or put her at risk. She's in good health, in her 50s, and more than willing to come out for an undefined period of time. He's signing us up right now to be hermits for the next month.

What do you think? Is he being panicky because this is all he's been allowed to think about for the past few weeks? Or is he being reasonable?
