I don't think it's customary, but I do provide a stipend for my part-time nanny when I did the math and realized she'd be paying an outsized percentage of her wages on metro. It's also tax-free, which is a plus. I consider it part of her total compensation though and would probably just pay a bit more per hour if I didn't give it to her.
