If you want an urban campus Clemson would not be a fit, but there is plenty to do in Clemson and around Clemson. It is 23,000 students with plenty of bars, right on a large lake near the mountains. I spent a lot of my time outside of class at Fike recreation center playing basketball. Clemson has a 15,000 acre experimental forest north and south of campus that has biking trails and there is an on campus golf course.

I was in the whitewater kayaking club as well.

Greenville is only 45 minutes away. Anderson is only 15 minutes away and has most big box stores, chain restaurants and decent local places.

If you like nothing college towns in a southern rural area where football is religion, then sure.

Very special place. You have got to like football though.

I would agree with this. I have family who went there, and we now go down every year for a football game. It's a very special place that I can't really describe. It's a fairly wealthy school in that the kids self segregate. Very Greek oriented and kids dress up. Lots of Southern families.

It's definitely in the middle of nowhere, though that's changed a lot in the past 25 years. There is more stuff around. Greenville is a really cute little city. Getting there is not easy from here. There are only two direct flights a day from DCA, and they are expensive. You cannot beat the football culture if you are into that. The campus is pretty spread out, and it's not that "pretty" aside from Bowman Hall. Lots of kids drink and drive as there is a large good old boy Southern network where this is not considered taboo. A lot of the guys hunt. There is a LOT of money there. Many kids who take private jets there. The little airport is incredible and I always wonder "who are these people?!?"

The cool thing about Clemson is it is right on a large lake. The two lake dikes are nice places to walk. There are also several lake beach areas. There is a large marina right across the lake and you can rent boats there.

Clemson has the largest university experimental forest surrounding a college campus. It is 17,500 acres and has numerous hiking and biking trails and a few small waterfalls.

Clemson has one of the top ranked college golf courses and it runs out by the lake.

Clemson is near the Blue Ridge mountains and you can see them from various points on campus and in town. The whitewater river Chattooga (the movie Deliverance was filmed on it) is about 1 hour away.

Given Clemson has pretty mild winters, if a student likes getting outside, Clemson is a great place to go to college.

I don't know the school but it seems popular among mean cliquey moms that I know so we've taken it off our list just for that reason.

We toured with our Hs senior who loved the campus. However, it is in the middle of nowhere. Rural area. It’s a 45 min drive from Greenville. If that doesn’t scare your child, then he might love it! I can’t speak to Southern culture vs this area but everyone we met was very nice. Sadly, they reduced their merit funding which will take it off her list.

DS says this is his top choice, we don’t know a lot about the school what is it like? Is it considered a strong state school? Would a boy from the DC suburbs fit in here? Thanks!
