It is a disproportionately large WL for a very limited number of opportunities. It’s disingenuous how large a WL the competitive schools keep and more about PR than opportunity.

They do firmly turn some down, but it’s not a small waitlist... to some degree, your child’s chances of moving from wait list to admitted depends on who declines spots. 3 girls declining spots most likely won’t lead to 3 boys getting off the wait list.

What about for middle school and for high school? Does Maret waitlist everyone who isn't admitted for the older grades as well?

If you mean, do they waitlist almost everyone who isnt accepted? Yes, almost everyone who is not accepted is waitlisted. The waitlist moves but, if on it, you are one of many, not a few.

I think it depends on the grade. For K, mostly no, although I have seen a friend’s DC getting off the waitlist, so it’s not impossible....
