OP, would you be willing to pay income taxes, property taxes, and sales taxes in another state (in ADDITION to your actual state of residence) for 18 years before your kid starts college?

We are also a military family. You (or your military spouse) could have done the GI Bill to pass down to your son. Most out of states schools will make up any tuition difference.

We used our GI Bills (enlisted, then college).

Not bad idea, but some states with stronger university systems will be disadvantaged like VA and CA.

2--starting an out of state school this fall
3--only a HS sophmore currently, but his #1 choice is an out of state school

I don't love paying out of state tuition, but it is "fair."

You may not love it but silly comment when you can afford it or you'd tell the kids to go instate or would have had less kids.

In many states, the amount they get from the state has declined precipitously.

It won't balance out because even with state funding, which has been declining steadily relative to inflation, the in-state tuition is not sufficient to run the university. What would happen is that everyone's costs would go up and land somewhere in the middle between the current in-state and out of state tuition.

Uh no. I mean I like the idea of my daughter getting to go to an out of state school at a big discount but state tax dollars are for the benefit of state residents.
