It never fails.

And since it is at your house you may start feeling resentment that they are not paying and staying longer.

OP here. I didn’t even think about this, but of course that’s how it goes....

Thanks for pointing that out.

Well, to be more accurate it is what happens with 96% of the families I have worked with over the past 18 years. Then of course will be the ones who say 5pm, but will end up being 6:15ish.

2. Single family rate is usually 85-95% of the share rate. You pay 5 hours at 1.5 times single family rate.

This is OP.

Thanks for the input from everyone. Good points. This response seems like it will work for us. Thank you.

About 3 weeks into care the other family will start showing up for pick-up at 5:58 anyhow.

We’re talking an hour a day. If you have a family that you think will work well with yours I wouldn’t give that up over an hour. I think you would pay share hours until 5pm split with other family, then you pay a single family rate for the extra 5 hours a week.

When I was in a share the other family needed more hours than we did. I just picked up my son at the end of 8 hours and paid her for the hours she took care of my kid. This worked well because they hosted and worked out of the house. I work from home so hosting would have been a bigger issue for me. The other family lived two blocks from me so it worked well.

In our case, where we need the longer hours we pay the full rate for that period. I don't really think of it as having to do anything with the other family, I guess. But, having the right family to share with is important so if that'd be difficult for you financially (nannies are expensive, I know!) I'd say yes, look for another family that needs the same hours.

Who’s hosting?

If the nanny is taking care of the babies at your hour house it’s common to get a small discount from the other family. Since you need the nanny longer it would make sense to split the cost in half that way.

If you are starting a share and you need the nanny from 8:30-6:00, but a second family only needs 8:30-5:00, how does that work? Would you keep looking for another family who needs the exact same hours? Or just pay the full extra hour on your own at time and a half? Or is the other family expected to pay half of the nanny’s hours if they join a share with hours already established?

I’m new to nanny sharing, so am clueless about how this works. Thanks for any tips!
