Are you watching the first team? It's tough to figure out from outside the Club since every age group has a different color pattern. Some guy was running his mouth about how another age group team they played last weekend was not good and they played long ball. This guy's team got crushed by the first team last year 6-0 in the same tournament. He did not know that the team he played in last week's tournament was a lower team with many completely new players that had not picked up the style so were struggling not to resort to long ball instincts. The first team was not even playing in that tournament and is a really great team.
The older teams regularly scrimmage local DA teams, including DC United and are very competitive with them. Games are always within 1 goal either way.
They do not have a large player pool so it can really drop off after first team. This is a problem for kids that have outgrown that team in skill and talent, but can't break into the first team. That is where the dissatisfaction comes in for some players. Most of the players I know on the first teams are very happy. Regardless, the coaching is solid no matter the team. But, if you are a good player on the 2nd team it can be frustrating.
They play in EDP. Most teams have moved up 2 divisions for the Spring. They are working their way up after coming in first in most age groups last Fall.
Yes, Herndon 07 Black. Not as strong as usual.
I made the comment a few hours ago about being surprised about Herndon not being strong. My son plays against Herndon and the 07 squad has always been competitive. I really hate the color naming schema.....prefer A,B,C or 1st, 2nd, 3rd team. Not like it matters to anyone else but the kids in the club.

I agree with many of the posters and I would give GFR another look first just because they are good team and close. If you want college exposure, you have to take a look at DAs like Arlington and VDA. Maybe ECNL teams like Loudoun, McLean, or BRYC.

Historically, the 07 age group has been pretty strong so I'm surprised to hear Herndon not being in the mix. Barca is a crap shoot from what I can tell and not work 3k to find out.

What about them? They are inside the Annandale which is a long ways from the OP. You're bragging about winning a 2-3 game tournament with only VPL teams and publicly calling them state champs? Get real.
I vote for going to SYA or looking at GFs again. The new consolidated club is pretty good.

I have seen GF and Sterling play within the last few weeks and both have good solid clubs. I like the coaching at Sterling. I agree on the previous comments about Herndon and Barca. I recently watched a VSA 07B game end early due to their dangerous play and one of their players spiting on the opposing team player. VSA coach lost control of their team.

I assume you are in reston area, what is your appetite to commute? If you are indeed in Reston, the previous post is a pretty good list. If you want to go further out, you have a few more options with VYS, Arlington, FPYC, BRYC, NVSC. My 07 is on a competitive team and have played all but Barca on this list so it's pretty accurate.
I'll add FCV to that NOGO list. 07 coach from ODFC made the news for stealing money from his teams.

You have lots of options.
We are in Loudoun so of course I'll say my son's club is the best! But based on what I've seen them play (he's also a 07) I think the team options you have within reasonable driving distance from you are the following:
1. SYA - Same kids since U9 so you can imagine how they play. Strong back line and they attack from all positions.
2. Herndon - Physical and well coached. There are a few kids that struggle with speed, but maybe you son can help there. I find their defense much more discipline than their attack.
3. Sterling - Fun team to watch, lots of skills, but lacks discipline. The chaos can sometimes over power really good teams so maybe there some merit to their style.
4. GF - I know you use to be there, but after the merger I find their teams much stronger. They compete every time I see them and in the past I felt like those are give me games.
5. BARCA Academy - just search the forum. Either you love them or hate them. I know a few kids that go there are they love it, but they were also kids that kept getting passed over with the 1st team.
6. VSA - Further out, but this is a really skilled team. Last I saw, they had a very positive coach that the kids took well too.
I'll see you at Loudoun tryouts! There is a new club called Revolution FC, but don't know much about them. Still stay away from CYA, ODFC, Leesburg.

well, there are 3 teams in the reston/mclean/herndon area:
GFRS, McLean, and Herdon. All of them have a lot of boys teams from a more competitive team at the top to lower-key teams at the bottom.
Look on their websites for tryouts, go to all of them and see what you end up with.

DS looking to rejoin travel after a brief hiatus and was wondering what the landscape looks like for 07B boys soccer.
We left Reston right before the merger to become GFRS and DS played in SFL in that time because he wanted to try out new positions and a different environment. Now he asked to go back to travel and we were wondering what teams look strong near the Reston/McLean/Herndon area? Who look good for development, who look good for winning, for future college goals, etc. ?
