It’s like saying “Phelps swam 49 for 100FR” or whatever, but how relevant it is to the author of this thread rather than teasing her child who is a beginner ?

I wasn’t trying to make her feel bad at all! She asked what a good time is so I shared a time of a good swimmer I know personally. I even went back a bit in his meet history to make sure I pulled a time from when he was a young 12 and not closer to 13. She wants to know what is considered a good time- I posted a good time from an actual 12 year old in an actual race.

This thread is making me laugh because the swimming world is so small and I think I could probably guess who the kid is that went a 51 at age 12.

There was no swimmer with exact that time in 2018.

It's a hard question to answer based on just the 1 time. By age 12 most year round teams will expect that he will at a minimum have four legal strokes and be able to complete a legal 100 IM. It will also depend on space in the specific program you are interested in. However if he has a B time with no previous competitive experience I would say he's off to a good start! Most teams don't have try outs this time of year but if you contact the teams directly they may be able to do an evaluation (again depending on space).

A good time is him progressing and improving at his own pace. If he wants year round, go for it. Don't try to compare him to kids who have been swimming 5-6 years year round.

"Really good" depends on the comparison group but the US age group motivational time standards should give you a good idea:
