If you get into your #1 choice, you will not be on any waiting lists. If you decline that spot, you can add yourself, post lottery, to other schools' waiting lists, where you will be placed at the back of the line in your preference category.

I am assuming you posted this ironically. Because I feel very bad for you if you are lacking in even basic levels of self awareness that would cause you to realize that your post was precisely the thing you were complaining about.

There's no way to reclaim your original place in the list--on purpose. The whole point of forcing people to rank is to make them decide at lottery time. Back before the common lottery, kids would move hundreds of spots on waitlists and the system was much less predictable.

Exactly and why you should rank by your true preference and nothing else. Pointless to try to game the system, attempt to strategize or manipulate your list for best outcome, etc.....

You put them back on the list and you go the end of your preference category whatever it happens to be for that school. So if it's a charter, back of the line for you. If it's your IB school, you go to the end of the IB category (which might meant that you still get in). If it's a school where you are a sibling, end of the sibling category for your grade. See?
