OP. I want to come along in another vehicle to their first few days of new school/daycare before I go to work. Is it good or bad idea? Will that cause more teary eyes? I know that DD2 is going to cry no matter what on first few weeks of daycare, and DS5 is a maybe.

1. If you are capable of picking up 2 kids, DH is capable of dropping off 2 kids. It'll be fine. He'll get a routine down after a few days.

2. BAD idea. If the kids are clingy toward you they will freak out when you say goodbye - twice. Once at home when they get in DH's car, and once at school when you say goodbye for the day. Say goodbye at home, quickly, and be SO EXCITED for their big days, and when you pick them up be SO EXCITED to see them.

Pretty much everyone I know does it this way if the schools are in the same direction! Kid 2 comes in for Kid 1's droppoff. Easy.

My DH does drop off. Same reason, I have harder time ditching and running on the tough mornings and I'd NEVER get to work on time. They are a bit more efficient with him. Some days it's hard, some days it's easy.

I do pick up. Which is also really hard! They are tired, sometimes whiny. I keep a spare bag of fruit snacks in my purse at all times when I just *need* someone to get in the car and nothing else it working.

My kids are 3 and 5. The 5 year old is great about 90% of the time. The 3 year old is hard about 75% of the time.

I am very much looking forward to the little one being 4, and a bit more reasonable. And then one day them being in the SAME SCHOOL for 3 glorious years.

Regarding the first week tears, can't help you there. But I recommend DH do some dry runs first to figure out the best routes and parking spots for logistic purposes.

You’ll work out whatever logistics, OP. My older kid goes to school a 15 minute walk from our house, and baby is in daycare about a mile away.

We handle it all sorts of ways- typically we split up, I take older DC and walk to school, DH will bike baby. But sometimes due to work schedules or weather (we don’t bike baby in rain or very cold days) we will switch it up.

1. No, you cannot tail him and pop up at the daycare - THAT will make for MANY teary eyes and a really hard way to start those first few daycare and kindergarten days!

2. Doing it in one order vs. the other might be easier, but he can totally do it himself! So, if you have an 18 month old who runs everywhere and is harder to contain, having to go to Kind. and getting the toddler out and trying to keep toddler going to the kindergarten door and then NOT into the room night be really hard. So then drop off toddler first, K'er walks in, walks out, done.
But a baby in a bucket can be easy, and K'er can go first.

OR if the drive just makes sense to drop one of first, do that and figure out how to corral or deal with the other child.

You will pick them up and hear about their day - don't make those drop offs harder by doing double parent drop off.

And, yes, start as you wish to continue. AND if a child is hysterical/teary at drop off those first 2 mornings, then it will often set a pattern for a child who then gets teary eyed out of habit. So let Dad be the dropper-offer- you be the collector at the end of the day!

We have 3 kids, and had 3 drop offs for 2+ years. You just...get it done. Drop off the K kidhopefully at a drop off line, so you don't have to unpack everyone from the car? But - just let your DH do it. Definitely don't tail behind them.

Terrible idea! Your DH is more than capable of dealing with this. Let the kids get used to the norm. You will only make it worse.

Agree. Start as you mean to continue. Your DH can do this.

Terrible idea! Your DH is more than capable of dealing with this. Let the kids get used to the norm. You will only make it worse.

Is there a drop-off line? I drop off DD in elementary school before dropping off her sibling at daycare but for the elementary drop-off, I don't get out of the car. Then I go into the daycare with my younger one.

I can't tell what you think the difficulty will be? Yes, DH can do this. He has to take both kids in for the first drop off.
