We looked in Cheverly and saw similar issues. We prefer neighborhood schools but would be open to charters but not private or parochial schools. Kids are young but we are leaving DC because of schools and don't want to have the same issue we would have if we bought here. We don't care about the "best" schools but would like an environment where a good chunk of kids are at grade level so that our kids don't fall behind and are challenged if they are ahead of grade level (or have resources if they are behind but so far they aren't behind). People we know in Greenbelt use parochial and it sounds like a common option but they are new to area and weren't sure.
UPES feeds to Hyattsville Middle School (which has a Creative and Performing Arts option available by audition as well as an honors track). The boundary high school is Northwestern, but there are other public options depending on test scores and student interests: Eleanor Roosevelt HS has a very competitive science/math program, for example. There are always going to be issues with PGCPS but there are a lot of benefits to public school education, including diversity (racial and socioeconomic), community, and other intangible factors.
