Girls schools are Hamlin and Burkes....Burkes is near Sea Cliff and the Lake St neighborhoods which are less Urban but families at both schools live all over. The other more suburban area to look at is Saint Francis Woods. Budget really matters. For public, Orinda or Piedmont

They're not a mess. It's just a lottery system.

Budget and where in SF are the things you need to know to determine where you should move. We already know your have kids in elementary which is the other important thing.

OP seems to be indifferent to privates or publics but if she happens to end up living in a place with good publics (idk how you just happen to do that), she would use them

You should plan for a longer commute.

OP updates
Kids are in 3rd and 1st. We know there are privates outside the city but I figure if we’re going to pay (in taxes) for good community publics, we may as well use them it’s just not a priority for us since we’d already planned to budget for private through 12th for both

For young kids, Rockridge (in Oakland) is great. If they are older, you might want to consider Orinda. Another option to consider is Lucas Valley in San Rafael. Traffic has gotten really bad in the Bay Area so the commute will depend on where in SF your office is.

I live in SF. Good neighborhood are Cole Valley and Noe Valley. My DD has gone to public school all her life so I can't really help you on the private school thing. Especially since you didn't say what grades your kids are in.

But you know there are private schools outside the city right?

We’re in AU Park right now but DH just got moved to the SF office. I don’t even know where to start looking for houses.
The admissions rep at my kids’ current school said they would be willing to help get the girls into schools in the city (and they’re usually pretty good at placement) but SF doesn’t seem as suburban as our part of the district so I don’t know if it’s the right fit or we should be looking down the peninsula instead. Anyway, what are some nice neighborhoods either in the city or within a 30 minute commute for us and our two girls? If it’s not in city proper then we’d need good publics because we don’t want to drive them into the city for school
