I thank the negative Nellie is a troll. Because come on, everyone knows how prestigious they are, especially Naval and West Point. I think they draw exactly the type of student you named, OP - very bright, athletic, community service oriented leader types.

This really impressive great-at-everything senior boy in our son’s school is heading to one and I sense parents are not impressed. And most kids don’t seem to have a clue what a service academy is, how selectivity, process of getting in, and commitment. I honestly think most sort of conflate it with just enlisting?

OP, this is exactly the type of kids that typically go to service academies. They are the best of the best.

Yep. They are looking for kids who excel at academics, leadership and athletics.

West Point graduates are impressive in so many facets of their lives. They all have STEM background, no matter what their majors, and they have extensive leadership training. Their grads are amazingly networked because they not only spent their four college years together, but they then work in the same organization for at least their first five years after college.

More prestigious than any of those. I could not be more proud if one of my kids accepted an academy appointment. The rest are just another college.

Agree. Way more prestigious than any Ivy.

It's not just a matter of grades and test scores, either, OP. Applicants have to be nominated by their member of Congress, senator, or the VP.

Yes, they're very prestigious!

Yes it is prestigious. Why do you care if people seem impressed?

Of course a ome people do have negative opinions or complicated views about the military, which could extend to a student who attends an academy.

This post really bothers me. Are you kidding? How do people not know that these schools are some of our best and brightest.

Our school systems have completely failed.
