She sounds like my son with ADHD-Inattentive which comes with the written expression disorder Dysgraphia and major executive functioning issues. It is called “twice exceptional” or 2E when you have superior IQ and also learning disabilities. My son has an IEP which allows for many writing accommodations.

The first stop is a full assessment for testing to see what’s going on.

OP said her child really struggles in some areas of school. A child with that high of a CogAT would not likely struggle with ANY area of school without a coexisting learning disability of some sort.

agree. Look at Mindwell for IQ and ADHD testing and the special needs board. Search for gifted and ADHD or 2e.

Also, your kid is in APS 4th grade. She might be simply board. Did she memorize Virginia's history yet? If yes, report to 5th grade.

Could it be that she is very bright and this school/teacher is not a good fit?

If you think there's more to it, I would consult a child psychologist. You can definitely do more testing, but if there is some anxiety going on a good child psych can really help.

Have you brought your concerns up with the school? My struggling daughter scored high on her CogAT as well. Me questioning the teacher about it ("hey...does it seem odd to you that she's struggling in school but scored so high on these tests?") triggered a Local Screening Meeting.

Thank you to the poster that recommended IQ testing. I will search on the board to figure out how to do that. My gut says something is going on and more information might help us figure out the issue. I didn't get diagnosed with ADD until I was an adult and I want to help her if there is something going on here.

Thank you. Yes, the score is out of 160. She scored 99%. She is very good at math but really struggles with writing in any subject. She also hates any kind of time pressure or timed tests. She is extremely literal and precise. Maybe we are dealing with perfectionism and anxiety so I am thinking to start with a psychiatrist? She was in a very unstructured Montessori school until this year with no assignments or grades so this is all sort of new.

If others would pursue any additional testing and if so where to start. I am not familiar with the COGAT. This score is obviously high and was unexpected and does not fit with our general experience with school. She often cries about school, hates writing, and we have had a tough time.

We live in Arlington and jut got this today. I am posting here because I searched on COGAT and found this board. We were in private school before so this is my child's first testing like this and I am very surprised because she really struggles with some areas of school. I am now wondering if she has some sort of learning disability going on and if we should seek further testing.
