I've loved driving this car everyday and especially on long trips with my wife and/or kids. But I'm sensing that the time has come that I need to let this one go - I can just feel the looking maintenance bills coming.
So the question is, what do I buy next? I have a short daily commute (about 4 miles from home to work). We have 3 kids - one is about to set off for college and the other two are 16 and 13 (the 16 old will drive the old RDX that our eldest is driving now). My wife says she wants me to have a "sexy" car - have I mentioned how much I love my wife!! - and she thought the A6 fit that bill perfectly. I could just get another A6, but I'm also quite taken by the A7. Is it worth going smaller - A4 or A5? Do I give up too much power or bells and whistles (relative to my A6)?
Not a fan of BMW and not sure if I really want to get a Mercedes either (just screams 'old man' - my bias perhaps). I was interested in the Lexus 350 GS - until two things: (i) my wife said it's not sexy and (ii) the reviews just blast it for being so underwhelming (for the price). Saw a Volvo the other day that caught my attention, but a Volvo? How does a Cadillac CTS stack up?
So now I'm hopelessly stuck and could use some advice from the gurus here. Also, I don't buy new cars - always 1-2 year old cars with less than 10k miles/year.
Thanks!
Mercedes is more exciting now than both Audi and BMW. I know Mercedes prior to about 2010 was an old-man's car, which is why I picked BMW over Mercedes when I bought my daily driver in 2006 and 2010. But since about 2012/2013, Mercedes Benz has been on a tear releasing new and exciting designs while BMW has faded away with boring designs, soft chassis, inadequate power, and generally uninspiring vehicles. The return of the 8 series is the first sign of life from BMW for a while - that and the M2 competition, which gets a nod from me not because it's particularly sexy, but that it's a really well-driving car that is a close representation of the traditional M-car ownership experience.
For Mercedes, I recommend taking a look at the CLS, which is like an A7, but nicer IMO. Also check out the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe. If you can swing it, one of the AMG versions of these cars would be a lot of fun to drive.
I'd also recommend looking at a Porsche Macan.
I don't know what your tolerance for excitement is, but a Maserati Ghibli SQ4 is also something you can consider. I drove one for a few years and it was very enjoyable. After the Ghibli I am now driving a Mercedes GT 4Door. I briefly looked at an M5 competition but it was too bland. The Porsche Panamera is also a good choice.
Never considered a Tesla because it's not a sexy car at all.
