Dear God no. You are required to leave a note with your info.

Exactly. The police have much better things to do.

I did the same thing a few years ago. I left a note with my first name and cell number. Then when the person called me, I took their information down and then called my insurance and explained what happened. Geico handled it from there. I didn't pay a dime, no issues with my rates, nothing. I didn't even need to call the person back.

OP here and it didn't occur to me to do that. I hate that you can't call the police in DC without calling 911.

I am a Police dispatcher. You did the right thing OP. YOu do not need a Police report for this, you just leave a note with your info.

I did this in DC a couple years ago. I left a note. She said it was $300. I paid and it was all good.

Not for minor property damage. In most cases they will tell you to handle it yourself by leaving a note like OP did or call insurance company..

Does it ever happen that you pay them, and then they claim you never did?

I am the PP. I did this and wrote on the check what it was for. Don't do cash. Or you could pay the car place directly and get a detailed receipt.

If it's an electric mirror and sort of fancy, it'll be upwards of $500. Ours was $700, but I did it to myself. I claimed it, since it's the reason I have insurance. They don't care about little oopses.

The mirror was still attached to the car, but the glass plate had fallen off, as had the outer casing. I put those both on the windshield next to my note.

Did you take the whole side mirror off or just the glass?

I annihilated someone's rear-view mirror today. I was able to find some scratch paper, a pen, and a plastic bag to put the note in since it was pouring. I left an apology and my number.

Is this something that I should do through my insurance? Or an out of pocket thing? I've never had any sort of accident before and I'm not sure what to expect.
