Hmm that's interesting but I'm specifically wondering how many kids leave after 8th and before 9th? My kid is on the waitlist for 9th. I know how many spots her middle school has and I'm wondering if any more open up due to kids leaving. It seems logical to me that some kids may leave at the natural break between 8th and 9th (like maybe go to to IB or Tech?) but this is just a guess and perhaps wishful thinking.

Waitlists start over each year now. It's unlikely that more than 1-2 kids from any elementary pool of 2-5 kids at H-B will transfer back to their home MS or move out of APS in a given year. When they had a single waitlist for each school for all three years, my kid was #5 and got in in 8th grade, and that was pretty unusual -- I knew plenty of people who had kids at #2 or #3 from their school who never got in. And since you start over every year now, even if you are #2 or #3 for 6th grade, you might move way down in the countywide list for 7th or 8th if you reapply. (Or, if you are low on the 6th grade list, you could move up--but there may be very few openings in later grades. I think last year there were 0 openings in 8th.)

TL, DR -- unless you are #1 or #2, you probably shouldn't get your hopes up, and even then it's kind of a long shot.

Yeah for some reason that’s the one I always come across when I’m looking.

My kid was #4 on the wait list and never got in despite moving to the #1 position for an entire year.

I think it largely depends on the school and how far down you are on the list.

Like if you’re number one on the list at Oakridge your changes are probably higher since they have 5 slots available it’s much more likely one of them will move or turn down a slot. But a school with just one spot is probably going to take it.

It doesn't move very much at our elementary school. Kids usually take the spots. Occasionally #1 on the waitlist gets in.

I don't think it's that straightforward. Some students may have dropped off the waitlist.

Does anyone have knowledge about the likelihood of movement from the HB waitlist for sixth? In looking at the data from this year, and subtracting the number of slots versus the number of applicants versus the number remaining on the waitlist, it looks like there is quite a bit of movement, but I'm not sure if I'm reading it correctly (and also math after a glass of wine is hard).
